I. Advantages of Magnesium Alloy Casting
It has a low density, catering to the trend of fuel efficiency in automobiles and lightweight household appliances.
2. Machining and cutting are easy. Compared with aluminum alloy, the tool life is extended by nearly twice the time, and the surface finish is good.
3. Magnesium alloy castings have fewer pores compared to aluminum alloy castings.
4. Magnesium alloy die-casting has less adhesion to the mold compared to aluminum alloy die-casting, which saves workers more effort.
Compared with aluminum alloy casting, magnesium alloy casting has a longer mold life. With good maintenance, the mold can be used for more than 250,000 times.
6. Compared with aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys absorb less heat from solid to liquid state and are more energy-efficient during the melting stage.
7. China is a major country rich in magnesium resources, with stable raw materials. The state encourages the use of magnesium alloys.
Magnesium alloy castings have the function of absorbing vibration and are a good choice for reducing noise in mechanical devices.
9. Magnesium alloys have relatively good heat transfer performance and can be used as heat dissipation shells for engines and complete machines.
10. It has a relatively high strength, being about 70% that of aluminum alloy. It can replace aluminum alloy and be applied in various fields, with a promising future.
Magnesium alloy has superior appearance quality and is not prone to aging. It can replace plastic and be applied in various fields, with a promising future.
Magnesium alloys, compared with plastics, have electromagnetic shielding functions and can be used in the electrical field.
Ii. Issues with Die-cast Magnesium Alloys:
1. The extraction and production of raw materials seriously pollute the environment, and the application of magnesium alloys is restricted by environmental protection.
2. The covering agent for magnesium alloys is flame-retardant and is prone to generating "dust" that is harmful to the body. It needs to be added for respiratory protection of workers.
3. The covering agent for magnesium alloys is flame-retardant and prone to generating HCL gas. When combined with water vapor, it produces highly corrosive dilute hydrochloric acid, which is harmful to factory personnel, equipment and factory infrastructure. Anti-corrosion measures are needed for factory roof crane supports and other facilities.
4. Flame retardancy of magnesium alloys with SF6 mixed gas. Since SF6 gas is mixed with toxic impurities such as HF during manufacturing, strict management is required. SF6 is a greenhouse gas and its use in China will be restricted.
5. Magnesium alloys are flammable. There are technical barriers to preventing combustion during melting, heat preservation and transportation.
6. Magnesium alloys are prone to combustion, and the workload for cleaning alloy residues in melting furnaces and holding furnaces is large.
7. Magnesium alloys are flammable. If the equipment is old and the machine leaks frequently, the alloy insulation furnace is not sealed. Please use non-flammable hydraulic oil to prevent fire. Do not store flammable and explosive gases and liquids in the production site.
8. Magnesium alloys are flammable. A large VAT of yellow sand and a large bucket of flame retardant covering agent should be placed on the machine and the edge of the melting furnace to extinguish the fire caused by sporadic material escape during the die-casting process.
9. Dust from magnesium alloys can spontaneously combust, and high-temperature magnesium slag can also burn, requiring centralized special treatment.
Magnesium alloy, as a structural material, is prone to moisture and oxidation and requires surface treatment. Chromium plating and anodic oxidation pollute the environment. At the bolt connection points of magnesium alloy, electrochemical corrosion and creep cause the fasteners to loosen.
Magnesium alloy castings have low thermal strength and are prone to hot cracks, which can cause air leakage and fracture of the castings.
Magnesium alloys have a low specific heat capacity and heat loss is fast. Therefore, molds are generally required and heating devices need to be designed.
Magnesium alloys burn when exposed to oil and explode when exposed to water. A large piece of magnesium alloy was out of control and the fire was hard to manage. Prevention should be the priority.
